by Alex Woodie

Oracle last week
released new technological underpinnings for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne.

The tech giant says the large number of new
features in

EnterpriseOne Tools 9.1 -- including a new GUI,
reporting enhancements, administration improvements, new high availability
features, and a new SQL Alter Table function --

makes it the largest EnterpriseOne release since it acquired the
software.

Seeing is believing and nothing impacts the way users view the
applications they use like the quality and ease-of-use of its user interface.
To that end, Oracle delivered a new Web browser-based GUI with Tools 9.1 that
it claims will enhance the user experience and increase productivity.

For starters, Tools 9.1 is mobile. That is, Oracle claims users can
use whatever device they want to access EnterpriseOne apps (provided the device
supports a Web browser). iPads are supported, and Oracle has even created JD
Edwards-specific gestures to speed tasks on iOS devices.

Oracle says the new drop-down menu toolbar will serve as an
excellent replacement for the left-hand navigation system that EnterpriseOne
previously used, while saving 25 percent of screen real-estate. The toolbar
will be used to launch applications, access reports, and access personalized
favorites. Users can optimize their screens by freezing or hiding columns.

Looking forward to working alongside the JD Edwards Denver team and attending the re introduction of the 'Hand on Labs' (HOL) a fantastic way to get to touch and play with the new applications and technologies. I'm expecting more information on the upcoming EnterpriseOne 9.1 release due in 2012 and the mobile application technology for JD Edwards will be a highlight.

A significant announcement that will be of interest to our JD Edwards customers is that Oracle has set a new Premier Support Timeline for the latest JDE releases.

In summary, EnterpriseOne release 9.0 Update 2 will now be treated as a major release. This means that Premier Support for this release will run until November 2015, not the earlier date of September 2013 which applies to 9.0 and 9.0 Update 1. A similar extension applies to World release A9.2 Update 1 .

This is a very encouraging response from Oracle to customer feedback that upgrades had been hard to justify with the previous Premier Support windows for the current releases.

The full text of the Oracle's announcement describes it as follows:

"To help customers accelerate the value of their Oracle solutions, Oracle today announced that it has set a new start date of Oracle Premier Support for the latest releases of Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and Oracle’s JD Edwards World.

By setting the Oracle Premier Support timeline for Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0 Update 2 and Oracle's JD Edwards World A9.2 Update 1 to their general availability dates, Oracle is giving customers more flexibility in their upgrade planning.

Premier Support for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0 Update 2 will begin November 2010 and end November 2015, while Premier Support for JD Edwards World A9.2 Update 1 will now run from May 2010 to May 2015.

The changes to the support timeline will allow JD Edwards customers to begin upgrades to the current versions immediately and enjoy Premier Support until 2015 without incurring additional fees."

We will continue to keep in touch with our customers and do what we can to lessen the load of worrying about their systems so they can focus on family, friends, home, etc. Some customer systems only support the Christchurch region so are less critical but some of our customers support other regions with systems running out of Christchurch so these will naturally be our priority when our customers are ready for us to act.

You can contact the Jireh team via our Contact form, or Mark on his mobile (027 672 5126), or Kaz on his mobile (027 672 5125), or Gavin on his mobile (021 428 059).

However, we note that Telecom have again this morning repeated their request for people to limit calls within New Zealand (not just Christchurch) and to TXT unless a call is really necessary.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those in and around Christchurch, and those with loved ones in and around Christchurch.

As we have just put on our Twitter feed: "Jireh is trying to contact our CHC customers to see if we can help so they focus on their families (via @GavinKnight) #eqnz".

You can contact the Jireh team via our Contact form, or Mark on his mobile (027 672 5126), or Kaz on his mobile (027 672 5125), or Gavin on his mobile (021 428 059).

However, we note that Telecom and Vodafone are asking for people to limit calls within New Zealand (not just Christchurch) and try TXT unless a call is really necessary.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those in and around Christchurch, and those with loved ones in and around Christchurch.

Think size, color, style but don’t limit your imagination to “jeans” this applies to shoes, sportswear and even some industrial products (we’ve heard people talking about steel) - anything that has “variations on a common product theme”.

Jireh is well placed to support this module as one of our key customers uses the third-party module on which Apparel Management has been based.

Lyle Ekdahl, Group Vice President, JD Edwards introduces Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Apparel Management and talks about the benefits to customers in this video clip:

A key message from Lyle is: "Our customers have seen consistent investment in product innovation over the past five years, and we are delighted to have earned their loyalty. As part of Oracle, we’ve had 15 discrete development releases for both JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and JD Edwards World products. We’ve brought seven new products to market and announced integrations that benefit JD Edwards customers. That’s a lot of work and investment from Oracle. And our customers are proving their support of our strategy by upgrading to the newest releases of our products. And we get our share of new customers, which validates that we are providing viable industry solutions to the marketplace."

These are the types of reasons why Jireh continues to invest in supporting JDE, helping JDE customers upgrade to the latest releases, and seeking out new customers for the JDE solution.

We encourage you to read the full article.
Key findings:

SAP cost almost twice as much as JDE to implement;

SAP costs more than four times as much as JDE in administration per end-user;

SAP requires more than four times as many IT support staff as does JDE;

SAP has ongoing costs more than four times as much as JDE.

What is particularly interesting about this study - apart from the findings! - is that the comparison is between two similar divisions of the same company running similar business processes, so it is almost a direct comparison and therefore the findings are more compelling.

Oracle have given permission for us to share the case study, so please email me if you want a copy.
